It felt like someone had taken a scoop out of my stomach when I heard the words: “we have to leave.” I knew there was no easy way for her to tell me a pipeline would be installed 120 feet from our door. My mother’s eyes, which normally comforted me and were encased in a ring of delicate long eyelashes, were empty inside. Black rivers washed away her sparkly makeup, and her hands felt cold and limp around me. The cream-colored letter she shakily held was a curse in disguise. We sat for a while on the floor of the dark kitchen, holding each other tight and wishing the bad news would go away.
