On January 2nd, a sudden sharp increase in liquefied gas prices sparked protests throughout Kazakhstan. Gas is used frequently in nearly every aspect of life, thus, citizens were outraged. However, there may be underlying causes contributing to this civil unrest. Kazakhstan has had long-standing social and economic disparities and political tensions.
