All You Need to Know About Winter Sports

As the fall season wraps up, many athletes are looking forward to competing this Winter. Our returning FSL champions for the winter season are Swimming and Girl’s Track. As some teams have already had preseason, where they practiced with new athletes and improved their teamwork, GS teams look stronger than ever and are ready to compete for FSL championships. For the GS community, there are many sports to look forward to and participate in, including Equestrian, Swimming, Basketball, Wrestling, and Track.

This year, Equestrian is one of our many promising sports. Meadow Gober (‘25) reflected on the previous season: “Last year went pretty well for us. We had 7 riders qualify as individuals for IEA regionals –that was half our team! Then, three moved on to Zones.” She also added, “The team is really improving this season by thinking more strategically. Our coach, Tiffany, has been working on that with us, and it’s really starting to show. In our first competition this season, we placed 3rd out of 7 teams.” When asked about the team’s goals, Meadow said, “the team’s main goals this season go hand in hand with how we can improve. At the end of the day, what really matters is giving the horse the right ride, having fun, and making our coach proud.” The equestrian team’s hard work over the offseason is evident, and they are poised for continued growth and success.

Swimming also continues to shine as an accomplished sport at George School. Kavya Gounder (‘26), noted the team’s success last year: “We won the Friends League Championship last year, and a few of our swimmers qualified to Easterns.” Baron (‘26) highlighted the boys’ team’s achievement of winning the Friends School League Championship two years in a row. Both swimmers expressed confidence in their teams’ seasons this year. Kavya said, “I think we definitely have a chance of winning this year. We just need to  come together  and work hard during the season to ensure that we perform well during the FSL.” Baron echoed her statement and confidence. When asked how the GS community can support the swim team, Kavya emphasized, “The GS community should come to our meets and cheer us on. It really makes a difference for the team. We have a lot of talented swimmers, and I believe we will perform very well this year.” Barron agreed, encouraging the community to rally behind the team. It is clear that both teams are dedicated to giving their best this season.

This year, the varsity wrestling team is returning for its 42nd season in the Friends league with similar high hopes of capturing the league championship. According to Ryan Park (‘25) “Our team this year is filled with second-year wrestlers, and there’s a lot of material to build on. All we need to do is to keep refining it.” Many wrestlers have been training during the off season in order to stay fit and hone their skills as they prepare for Friends League matches and the state tournament. After Anna Gluschuk’s impressive performance at Nationals, the wrestling team is motivated to get their chance in the spotlight.

Anne Catherine (‘26) said that “the community during winter track is really fun, especially during the long meets. It’s great being with a group for so long.”  With dedication, diligence, and a strong sense of community, the winter track teams are set for another amazing season.
