In the bustling halls of George School, a new face has emerged, bringing with her a passion for literature and a dedication to her students. Meet Abbi Tobin, a new, vibrant 9th-grade English teacher. Born just across from George School at St. Mary’s Hospital, Abbi’s roots in the community run deep, setting the stage for her impactful journey into education.
“I knew I wanted to be a teacher since I was very small,” Abbi shares, “I have two passions: books and kids. I love reading and analyzing texts, and George School students are always willing to learn.”
Her journey to becoming an educator took her through Holy Family University, where she pursued a dual major in English and Education. One of Abbi’s unique teaching styles is her ability to foster engaging discussions and debates within her classroom. “I love the debates we have,” she reveals. “In English 9, we argue about debates like whether Servants 1 is a character in ‘The Taming of the Shrew.’ The discussions about Holden Caulfield in English 9 and the HL IB class are always memorable.”
When asked about her secrets to keeping her classes engaging, Abbi emphasizes the importance of empathy and flexibility. “I remember what it was like to be in high school,” she explains. “Some people lose those memories, but I always try to put myself in the students’ shoes. Grammar lessons are kept light and fun, and I encourage a freestyle atmosphere in class.”
Beyond the classroom, Abbi’s hobbies and interests play a significant role in influencing her teaching style. “I used to babysit as a kid, so I enjoy helping people,” she shares. “I find stress relief in music, painting, and drawing. I often doodle characters from the books we read, such as characters from Taming of the Shrew, Katherine and Bianca.”
As her students journey through her class, Abbi hopes they will take a newfound appreciation for literature and a sense of comfort in her classroom. “I want them to enjoy the books a little and remember certain parts,” she expresses.
In the vibrant tapestry of George School’s faculty, Abbi Tobin shines brightly, inspiring a love for literature and fostering a sense of belonging within her classroom. As her journey unfolds, she continues to leave a major mark on the hearts and minds of her students, shaping the future one page at a time.
