With the second term wrapping up, what’s a better way to celebrate than Cougar Spirit Week and Homecoming? This year, the student council organized a spirit week to encourage the whole community to show their Cougar Spirit! The schedule kicked off with a Zoom Meeting theme on Monday with a Covid throwback in comfy bottoms and professional tops. It followed with Twin Tuesday, where GS students paired up and dressed in identical clothes. Barbenheimer Wednesday was with either ties and hats or bright Barbie pink! Thursday included the pep rally and beach day outfits. Lastly, the week ended with Cougar Crazy Drip followed by the invasion of Westtown. Flora, one of the student council presidents for this year, noted the significance of this event, “I remember during my freshman year when my advisor Melaina Young, a George School alum, recounted her times of invading Westtown to steal the moose head. ”To wrap everything up, GS hosted the green and white HOCO dance.
“Spirit week[ is a] way to raise spirit and to mix things up. Students are stressed from classes, schedules, and work. [It is] a way for the Student Council to help relieve the stress of students by allowing them to express themselves through fun themes.” shared Flora. She added that her favorite part of Spirit Week was “Monday, [where] the students wear formal tops with pajama bottoms.
Compared to last year, this year’s themes were quite varied.. The student council looked for more activities that involve more engagement with the whole student body next year.
Following that, the homecoming dance blasted the weekend with more excitement. From 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm the student body joined together in Marshall Center for the dance. “My favorite part about HOCO this year is the music. This year’s DJ is really good. I love the music this year and that really made the dance so much better.” shared Angie ’26. “Last year was my first ever HOCO dance, it was a blast. This year, I believe going to Westown made for a really good lead-up to the dance. Hopefully, next year a lot of Westtown friends can come to our game.”
The purpose of homecoming is to bring the community together, it’s a great way to celebrate the school spirit and for the whole school to come together to celebrate and support our sports team. The tradition of spirit week and homecoming has been at GS for a long time. It brings joy and the cougar spirit to the community every year. The community is looking forward to another great cougar weekend next year.
