After coming off a very successful 22-23 season, the future of George School cheerleading was unknown, due to the leaving of the prior coach, Chelsie Tuttle. So how did this program remain clean and exciting? After spending some time interviewing our new coaches, I have found their new ideas and plans for the squad to be fresh and expansive. We have two new coaches on the team, Robyn Weisser (Head Coach) and Jennifer Beccaris (Assistant Coach).
Robyn is originally from the Poconos and attended Temple University. She was involved in athletics in high school, with backgrounds in basketball, softball, and, of course, cheerleading! Robyn’s cheerleading career includes competing with her high school in Orlando, Florida, participating in many popular parades, and working for UCA! She has two children at Newtown Friends School, so is familiar with a Quaker community. She is also an avid Philly sports fan!
Jenn graduated from Millersville University in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She has 3 children, the middle of which attends GS (Kylie Beccaris ‘25), and is a 5th-grade teacher at Newtown Friends School! She coached high school cheer for 5 years.
Both coaches describe the beginning of the season to have started a little slow but overall reflect that it has been a learning experience for everyone on the team, and both are excited about new growth. Some goals they have for the team include mentoring stunting and tumbling, building confidence, getting routines ready for competition, and preparing each cheerleader to be successful at the college level, if that’s what they so desire. They are excited to show the GS community what the team is capable of!
Both coaches are set on competition. The team will start a new competition circuit with UCA this winter season. UCA is the Universal Cheerleading Association, the largest cheerleading association in the world. They host a national championship competition every year in Orlando, Florida. The team’s goal for next year is to participate in competitions that could earn the team a bid for that national championship with UCA. Although this is a highly competitive field that the Cougars would be entering, both coaches are confident the current and future squads will have what it takes. After asking what a daily practice looks like, Coach Jenn laid it out perfectly. “Currently, our practices start with a 10 minute ab workout, followed by stretching. We practice cheers, dances, and stunting. During our next season we will be adding conditioning and building endurance. We plan on taking our stunting to the next level over the last few weeks of the fall season.”
GS cheerleading, after a challenging start, is heading towards great success under the new coaches, practice plan, and commitment to competition.
